An NHS mobile clinic will be based at Asda Radcliffe from 28 August when people registered with GP practices in Radcliffe and those with a Radcliffe postcode registered at Rock Healthcare Limited and Tower Family Healthcare will be invited. It will then move to a location to be confirmed in Bury town centre where the remaining people will be invited.
Oliver Butterworth, Senior Programme Manager at Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance, said: “Lung Health Checks help the NHS to spot any lung cancer symptoms earlier, when it is much more treatable.
“If you’re registered with a doctor mentioned on the list from the Radcliffe and Bury areas, are a smoker or used to smoke either shisha or cigarettes, you’ll be sent an invite through the post or via text message.
“Please do come along for your appointment. You’ll have a chat with a nurse and fill out a questionnaire to look at your risk. About half of the people who visit may also need a low-dose scan which we will also do on the truck.
“It will most likely offer you some reassurance. But it could save your life!”
The lung health checks are being rolled out based on where they are needed most. This is organised via individual Primary Care Networks (groups of GP surgeries at a time) at a time across Greater Manchester.
Lung health checks have already been offered to eligible people registered with a GP practices in Whitefield. People who were invited previously who didn’t attend the first time can always rebook by their appointment by calling 0161 529 0900. Newly eligible patients will be invited by the programme team at a later date.
There are further plans to expand the programme to other parts of Bury and Greater Manchester in the coming months and years to ensure that all eligible participants are invited.
People who are not registered with the practices listed but who meet the eligible criteria (aged 55-74 and past or current smokers) will receive an invitation once the lung health check comes to their PCN. In the meantime, if these people have any concerning symptoms, they should speak to their GP who will be able to refer you for tests if needed.
