Some of the award winners from the Patients' Choice Awards

The winners have been announced for the first ever Greater Manchester Cancer Awards.

Organised by the Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance, the awards honour the outstanding work being done across Greater Manchester to improve lives and treatment for people affected by cancer.

The Greater Manchester Cancer Awards honoured some of the amazing work going on in patient care, innovation, education and research across Greater Manchester.

A panel of judges – including patient representatives and staff working in cancer from across the city – whittled down around 60 entries to a final shortlist.

The awards were open to teams in NHS, research, voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE), and public health /local authority sectors. They recognise the collaborative approach our teams take in Greater Manchester to work across organisational boundaries to make things better for our patients.

Head judge Miss Susannah Penney, Associate Medical Director at Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance, said:

“We been thrilled at the response to our first ever Greater Manchester Cancer Awards with over 60 entries. The standard has been amazingly high and it was so tough for our judges to choose the winners.

“These awards really demonstrate all valuable work that is going on across our cancer network and celebrate the dedication of staff who go above and beyond every day to improve outcomes and experiences for people affected by cancer in Greater Manchester.

“I’d like to say a huge well done to everyone who was shortlisted and to our fantastic winners.”

Winning entries include the Making Smoking History in Greater Manchester project and a project to test womb cancer for Lynch syndrome where Manchester-led research changed UK clinical practice.

The Patients’ Choice Award voted for my members of the Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance’s User Involvement Network honoured the Prehab4Cancer work and the One Stop Lung Cancer Clinic Team.

Other winners included the Primary Care Network Collaboration in Early Diagnosis, MyChristie-MyHealth – The Chrsitie ePROMS project, Encouraging Inclusivity in Technology Clinical Trials Project and Teaching patient and carers to inject chemotherapeutic drugs in the comfort of their own home.

 

Dr Julie Wray, Patient and Judge, helped to hand out the awards at a ceremony at the Hilton, Deansgate on Tuesday 18 October.

She said: “I found reading the entries heart-warming and comforting in that so many healthcare staff are deeply passionate to improving cancer care in Greater Manchester.

“As a patient you are not always aware of what’s going on behind the scenes to improve and advance cancer care, these entries revealed that patients and their family carers are at the heart of GM cancer care services.”

The event was hosted by Steve Bland from the BBC’s You, Me and the Big C podcast and featured a welcome from Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester.
