Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance is delighted to announce that it has been shortlisted for four prestigious awards at this year’s HSJ Awards 2024 – setting the standard for all healthcare excellence.

The Alliance has been shortlisted for the following categories:

  • Modernising Diagnostics Award,
  • NHS Race Equality Award,
  • Provider Collaboration Award
  • Driving Efficiency through Technology Award.

The awards recognise outstanding contributions to healthcare.

Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance has been shortlisted for a number of prestigious awards

1350+ entries have been received for this year’s Awards, with 234 projects and individuals reaching the final shortlist.

The high volume and exceptional quality of applications showcases the impressive levels of innovation and care continually being developed within the UK’s healthcare networks.

Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance was shortlisted, ahead of the official awards ceremony to be held later this year (21st November), following a thorough judging process. Four entries from the Alliance stood out as a real ‘success stories’ worthy of a prized place on the panel’s shortlist.

Shortlisted projects:

  • Greater Manchester Chest X-Ray AI Pilot Project, shortlisted for the Modernising Diagnostics Award, led by Dr Rhidian Bramley
  • This Van Can – the Greater Manchester Prostate Cancer Awareness Roadshow pilot, shortlisted for the NHS Race Equality Award, led by Sotonye Tolofari
  • Single Queue Diagnostics Image Guided Lung Biopsy Pilot, shortlisted in the Provider Collaboration category, led by Dr Rebecca Duerden
  • Single Queue Diagnostics in Cancer (a system-wide solution), shortlisted in the Driving Efficiency through Technology category, led by Professor Matthew Evison

Sotonye Tolofari, Clinical Lead for UrologySotonye Tolofari, Clinical Lead for Urological Cancers at Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance, said:

“The This Van Can Prostate Cancer Awareness Roadshow was an innovative project particularly aimed at black men who have an increased risk of developing prostate cancer. It allowed us to get out into communities and offer information and a PSA test for those most at risk. We are very pleased to see this hard work – which involved lots of partnership working with our partners in the voluntary sector – recognised.”

Dr Rebecca Duerden, Clinical Lead for Single Queue Diagnostics Image Guided Lung Biopsy Pilot said:

“It is an honour to be shortlisted for this award for Provider Collaboration. This recognition is testimony to the years of hard work by the whole team, spanning trusts, specialities, staff and patient groups, to deliver successfully this ground-breaking service for image guided lung biopsy for the 2.8 million people of Greater Manchester and beyond.”

“We are delighted that our systemwide project on sharing capacity for specialist cancer diagnostics has been shortlisted.

“This innovative programme has significantly reduced waiting times for patients , improved equity of access and better utilised system assets.”

The selected winners will be announced during the awards ceremony at Evolution London on 21st November 2024.

The event will not only reflect the HSJ Awards’ enduring ethos of “sharing best practice, improving patient outcomes and innovating drivers of better service” but will also serve as a timely and well-deserved thank you to the sector.

The 2024 awards judging panel was once again made up of a diverse range of highly influential and respected figures within the healthcare community, including; Stephen Powis, National Medical Director, NHS England, Rosa Waddingham, Chief Nurse, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire ICB and Matthew Style, Director General, Secondary Care and Integration Department of Health & Social Care, as well as a range of esteemed Chief Executives from NHS Trusts across the UK.
