A chest x-ray is a photograph of the inside of your chest.
It shows the doctors if your lungs are healthy or if you need treatment.
If there is a problem, like lung cancer, finding it early can make treatment easier.
You can go straight for an x-ray if:
You have a doctor (GP surgery) in Bury, Heywood, Middleton, or Rochdale.
and:
You are over 40 years old.
and
You have one or more of these things wrong with you for three weeks or more:
Cough
Feeling very tired (fatigue)
Finding it harder to breathe
Chest pain
Weight loss (without trying)
Not being hungry
Coughing up blood
(if you cough up blood, you should call your doctor urgently and explain what happened)
How can I get a chest x-ray?
There are four walk-in centres where you can get a chest x-ray. You don’t need an appointment – just come along during opening hours.
What will happen after my chest x-ray?
You will be given more information by the doctors and nurses when you go for your chest x-ray.
This will include a leaflet.
Your results will be sent to your home in the post.
If your results have not arrived after 14 days, you should contact the place where you had your chest x-ray.

What if I don’t have a GP?
Anyone in England can register with a GP surgery to access NHS services. It’s free to register.
You do not need proof or address or immigration status, ID or an NHS number. GP surgeries are usually the first contact if you have a health problem. They can treat many problems and give health advice.
They can also send (refer) you to other NHS services.
How it works
Most people need to register with a surgery close to where they live.
You can go online to find a GP surgery near to where you live.
You can also go along to the GP surgery to register in person.
