Researchers, community workers, patients and NHS staff who have gone above and beyond to make a difference to the lives of people affected by cancer have been honoured at a ceremony in Manchester city centre.

The awards are now in their third year and have grown bigger and bigger each year.

The third Greater Manchester Awards at the Manchester Deansgate Hotel was compered by comedian and actor John Thomson known for his roles in The Fast Show, Men Behaving Badly, and Cold Feet.

This year there were eight award categories available to enter. Over 100 entries were  judged by a panel made up of clinicians, managers and user involvement representatives. All entries were also entered into the Patient’s Choice Award allowing patient and carer representatives from the Alliance’s Greater Manchester Cancer Voices Community to vote for one final winner,

The winners are:

  • Innovation Award – VR distraction therapy in the paediatric proton beam therapy service at The Christie (With a Highly Commended given to the LungAware digital patient activation project)
  • Spark of Excellence Staff Award – Dr Sindhu Retnabai
  • Educational Impact – Digital Clinical Placements – the Manchester Model
  • Commitment to Equality – the RAPID-RT study (Highly commended to Healthier Salford Community Champions Network)
  • Research Award – NIHR Global Health Research Group for Improving Oesophageal Cancer Survival in Kenya: The Hub and Spoke Model
  • Greater Manchester Collaboration -This Van Can Community Outreach
  • Jo Taylor Award for Excellence in Cancer Volunteering – Maria Lawal
  • Patients Choice Award – Duncan Edmonstone

Cancer Alliance Recognition awards: LungAware – Digital Patient Activation, Health and Wellbeing Hub and Pan-GM Daily Virtual Acute Oncology MDT.
